Batman Begins/Dark Knight recs Part 1
Okay, so Dark Knight has eaten my brain and relegated Star Wars to the back-burner. I didn't bother to watch Batman Begins because I'm not usually a fan of superhero movies even though I do like action and adventure. I've never really read any Batman comics, seen the old TV show or watched the cartoons. I remember the two films that had Michael Keaton in them being pretty watchable but I saw them when I was much younger. When I heard people talking about Heath Ledger giving an impressive performance, being backed up by such big names as Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Gary Oldman I decided it might be worth seeing.
I have now gone back to watch the first film, Batman Begins and I'm more than converted. So, here are a bunch of recs I have compiled. They will probably have to be posted in parts so I'm starting with a particular focus on Jim Gordon. Gordon always needs more love – especially when he’s Gary Oldman.
Gordon-centric (no pairings) Some of these are angsty, some sentimental and sweet, and one is very creepy - read the warning! Summaries by the authors are in italics. Nearly all contain spoilers for one or both movies.
( * * * )</i>
The next recs post should be Gordon/Bruce. |

I have completed corrections to my thesis and re-submitted. Unfortunately, we have been told that our honours marks will not be released until July. We were originally told that an informal, it's-not-official-but-we'll-give-you-a-hint mark would be handed out so that we didn't have to wait 2 or 3 months but apparently this is wrong. *sigh*
So, I am applying to everything without having any clue what my mark is. On the bright side, there sound like some really good projects on offer (some of them overseas) but I don't know how likely they are to take me without a mark. My supervisor says go for it anyway, so maybe it's not an unusual situation.
The journal article draft (I should start referring to it as a manuscript but it sounds a little pretentious) is continuing, as is the translation. I forgot how much I loved Indonesian and I really should find some way to keep practicing - short of saving up for a holiday.
I have also sort-of quit my job at Chooks. I've refused to keep doing the saturday night shift but they're re-doing the roster this week under pressure for head office. If they offer me a convenient time, I might take it but otherwise I'll just stop working there. Instead, I've agreed to work every saturday at the Melville hockey kitchen. Pay is less but its less stressful and I'll know a fair portion of the customers anyway. It also has the feeling of being partially 'volunteer' work.
And *drum-roll* we won our hockey game last night! Woo! First win of the season and it was a fun game. Instead of playing centre-half, a position I have started learning this season, I played at my former position of left half-back. It was one of those nice nights where everytime the opposition went to hit the ball, they'd point with their feet in the direction they were going to hit. That way I take two steps to the left, pick up the ball and look like I have really impressive reflexes *grin*
We had one defensive short-corner, where I managed to run out and get my stick to the ball before the other player could hit. I was slightly surprised that I got the ball and didn't follow it up, but they lost their momentum and our other defenders cleared it - I assume, as this happened behind my back. At the other end of the field, we had heaps of attacking short corners. And long corners. And every time the other team took a free hit, we blocked it in and cut off all their options. Everybody was marking properly. It was brilliant.
The only downside was that we waited until 3 minutes before the end of full-time to score our only goal! |

Okay, so all I have to do for Honours is wait for my mark.
Had my VIVA (Oral Defence) today which was an hour of being asked questions by 5 academics. Who all nicely opened by telling me they enjoyed reading my thesis and found it interesting. Then they asked a lot of questions. Sometimes I was a little confused in my answers. Somebody finally asked me about nutrition! Yay! Some answers I felt very confident about. So, a mixed result, I think.
I am now sitting down to write a journal article based on my thesis, which if successful will greatly help my chances of getting a PhD scholarship (it's partly based on undergraduate marks, partly on honours marks and also takes into consideration other things such as publications and relevant work). I really want to do one now, and my supervisor has said just plan as if you already knew your marks. So I'm not intending to be seriously looking at full-time work until journal article is taken care of.
I'm also doing a rough translation of a Masters Thesis for one of the lecturers. And being paid for it :)
I have volunteered as team manager for my hockey team. This means I have to be on time and be organised. I'm cautiously optimistic that it will work. On the downside, I did something to my knee on Sunday at the first hockey game of the season. We lost but it was a good game for our first. My knee didn't start hurting until about two hours after the game, when I got out of the shower. I have been hobbling all week but I'm hoping a week of rest will be good for it. I will turn up to the game regardless! |

Meme grabbed from yuuzaiden.
1. Grab the nearest book. 2. Open the book to page 123. 3. Find the fifth sentence. 4. Post the text of the next 4-7 sentences on your LJ along with these instructions. 5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest (unless it's too troublesome to reach and is really heavy. Then go back to step 1).
Also, it is possible to find old quotations that clearly indicate that the horns of the cuckold were branching, and must therefore have been seen, at least by some, as being antlers of deer, rather than bull's horns. For example, in Butler's Remains of 1680: 'His own branches, his horns, are as mystical as the Whore of Babylon's Palfreys, not to be seen but in a vision.'
The Diana's theory Continuing with the idea of a stag, there is a classical legend that has been seen as the starting point for the horns = cuckold equation. This is the story in which Diana the huntress made horns into the symbol of male downfall. Actaeon, another legendary hunter, was supposed to have sneaked a look at her naked body when she was bathing. This so angered her that she turned him into a stag and set his own hounds upon him, which promptly killed and ate him.
Hmm. Can anybody guess what book this is from? |

| Thesis stress and Ghost in the Shell Recs |
[Apr. 6th, 2008|12:06 am] |
6 Days left til Thesis dead-line... *drum-roll*
I think I'm behind but I'm not sure. I have something written for each section but I don't think it's good enough yet. I keep tossing it to one of my supervisors who scribbles all across it and tosses it back. I promised to send it to the other Supervisor on Friday and completely forgot.
Decided on Friday to go to a Queer as Folk marathon (U.S. version) at Uni - mmmm, pizza and soft drink from plastic shot glasses because we couldn't find any proper cups. Went from about 6:30pm and I piked at about midnight. Haven't seen it before and really liked it. Was a bit trashy and it has lots, and lots of sex scenes. The last thing I need right now is another fandom, considering I've deliberately put Ghost in the Shell : Stand-Alone Complex on hold until I've finished thesis. But now I want to watch more of both, and I would like to check out the U.K. version.
I also have more stories to write for the Beast Wars table...
So, to add to today's theme of doing nothing thesis-related, I'm posting recs for Ghost in the Shell : Stand-Alone Complex. Most of it is tv-series related though there are a couple of ones related to the movies. A range of pairings, including Batou/Togusa, Batou/Motoko, Togusa/Motoko and Aoi/Togusa. Also, for some bizarre reason Togusa makes me think of the character Danny Messer from CSI:NY? *looks confuzzled*
( Ghost in the Shell )
I have written one of my own, though it's waiting on feedback from Erin before it gets posted. |

Welcome! This is my first post at InsaneJournal.
Who am I? I am Brightbear, a full-time student and part-time reader and writer of fanfic. I've created this account primarily as a back-up for my livejournal account, but only time will tell what will be happening in the future. I may just post everything to both journals or use one more than the other. I just don't know yet.
I work in several different fandoms according to my current inspiration. My muse is rather fickle and unpredictable so I tend to wander. Sometimes I fall in love with a fandom again more than a year later (I'm back to working on the sequel to a Star Wars fic I wrote five years ago). I also have a website and fic posted to several archives.
Discussions of fic, fandom, politics or anything in my interests list is extremely welcome!
Also, I've never had more than 6 icons at once before. Yay! *bounces* |
